TODAY'S PROGRAM

Patrick Hicks will introduce Scott Simmons, who is President of Simmons Properties; a historic property development and management company.  He is the former National Sales Manager of Cornerstone Medical.

Scott attended Georgia Tech University on a track scholarship.  He served on the board of Goodwill and Christmas in April.  He is also on the selection committee of the Hitchcock Awards.

He is 39 years old and he and his wife, Jill, have a daughter Bailey Marie, 7, and a son Byron, 3.

He recently developed a housing project slum into loft apartment's downtown.  Scott is running for Mayor and just opened his campaign headquarters at 1809 West 2nd St. off Mulberry.  If you want to know more about Scott you can go to his e-mail address, www.simmonsformayor.com

LAST WEEK'S PROGRAM

Frank Wells introduced Kathryn Hollingsworth, Director of the Archibold Senior Center of the Montgomery Area Council on Aging.  She was born and raised in Birmingham; graduating with honors from Birmingham Southern with a B.A. in Business Administration.  She worked in radio in Birmingham and television in Montgomery.

She has been director of the center since 2000.  Kathryn began by saying she has a warm feeling about Kiwanis.  Another chapter of Kiwanis had helped the center.  The center was given money from Mary Kathryn Archibold Blount.  Before that they had to rent space or have space donated.  They are a nonprofit organization; they do not have means for raising money.  When they are given the center, they thought great they could rent it.  It is rented on weekends for weddings, all kinds of other events, providing some income.  One Kiwanis club gave them over $20,000 to carpet the center.  The carpeting was complete last month and she invited us to come see it.

If we went, we would see a tattered tile area where the tap dancers dance.  The tap dance instructor is 83 years old and has taught tap dancing for 60 years.  One of the 2 tap dance teams is 80 + years old, but won’t tell her the right age.  They have performed at the Jr. League Flea Market for the past 4 years.  They have been one of the star attractions at that event.  They also have another tap dance team, plus some other students that are becoming adept at performing.  It is inspiring to see these 80 year olds so physically fit.  The tile area is why she was with us, to ask for help in replacing the tile.  The condition of the present tile is hard for the tap dancers legs and bones.  They would like to have a floating floor to make it easy for the teams to dance.  It would make it a more desirable place to rent.

Many trips are available to the senior.  They don’t make anything on their trips, so they can keep the cost low.  There are computer programs where they have to buy books, software and maintain the computers.  The prices they charge for classes are low, so they just break even.  The only way to keep the center going is by rental.  They would appreciate any help they would receive.

Every month they have a theme luncheon.  The luncheon has a member of the month drawing and volunteer of the month award.  Each month they have a speaker and this month they are having the speaker from Blue Bell Ice Cream.  There was a picture in their newsletter of one of their cookquette.  The luncheons are \cooked by Charlie Hughes and a group that has come to be known as their cookquette who help with luncheons.  The picture of the cookquette is when she was 20 years old.  This month everyone is asked to bring a picture of them when they were 20 years old.  The pictures will be put on a display board and people will be asked to guess who the gorgeous babes are, matching the pictures with people.

There are many things to choose from; exercise classes, etc.  If you are over 55, you don’t have to pay to attend the classes.  Low stress aerobics on Monday, stretch and balance classes are held on Wednesdays and Fridays.  The Wednesday and Friday        instructor was a dance instructor that had a stroke.  She was paralyzed on her right side.  She developed exercises to recover the coordination she lost.  Those exercises are used in the classes to build muscles back up and improve coordination.

There is a computer program called “Meet the Computer” that introduces seniors to the use of computers.  They have classes that teach e-mail, etc.

Many members don’t have anyone.  Once a month they have a birthday tea.  People are overcome when they are given a birthday party.  Depression among senior causes many ills, including Alzheimer.

Kathryn who has a beautiful voice sang 3 songs, “You Are the Wind beneath My Wings”, “A Kiss of Springtime”, and “Embrace Me”.  It was a treat to hear her sing.

LAST WEEK'S GUESTS

Pete Summer had John Cruise, Manager of Steak & Shake as his guest.

Scott Powell had Jerry Reynolds as his guest.

George Wilson was joined by his daughter, Laura, on leave from the Air Force.

ENTERTAINMENT

Our own Elvis, Al McLellan sang an old Hank Snow favorite, “Still in Love with You”.

 THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

Mike Winstead said sometimes rushing through the week we don’t slow down to think how great our God is.  Moses in the desert with his people; what was he going to do with them.  He had to feed 2-3 million people; required a lot of food.  The Quartermaster of the U.S. Army reported Moses would have needed 1,500 tons of food a day.  He would have needed 11 million gallons of water a day; about 5 gallons a day. To cross the Red Sea at night; if they were double lines it would have been 800 miles long and take 35 days.  If God took care of Moses’ problem, don’t you think he’ll take care of you?
